Created in 1901 at the height of the Belle Époque, Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée. Briançon by Louis Trinquier-Trianon invites the viewer to the sunlit embrace of the French Alps. This Art Nouveau travel poster celebrates Briançon—France’s lofty, fortified mountain town—through flowing lines, floral ornament, and a poised tableau of elegant holidaymakers. Designed for the famed PLM railway, the composition fuses natural grandeur with the optimism of modern travel, when new rail links made alpine air, dramatic valleys, and historic ramparts accessible to a wider public.

Our edition is a museum-quality fine art print, produced on acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas for long-lasting color and detail. Choose from a range of sizes to suit your space, with optional framing to arrive ready to hang. The Unique Maps Co. also offers thoughtful personalization—add a gift message, a commemorative date, or custom titling—to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

Louis Trinquier-Trianon was a French illustrator and poster artist active around the turn of the twentieth century, known for harmonizing Art Nouveau ornament with clear, inviting travel imagery. Working in and around Paris, he contributed to the flourishing language of French poster art, where graceful botanical borders, elegant figures, and disciplined typography guided the eye and kindled wanderlust. His work for railway lines like the PLM distilled place, mood, and movement into a single, compelling frame.

The subject here—Briançon in the Hautes-Alpes—was (and remains) a destination defined by altitude, sunlight, and storied fortifications. Perched at the meeting of high mountain valleys and serving as a gateway to the Écrins, Briançon appealed to turn-of-the-century travelers seeking clean air, scenic promenades, and a touch of history. This poster reflects a pivotal cultural shift: leisure in picturesque locales became part of modern life, and the railway proudly advertised both the journey and the destination.

Trinquier-Trianon’s color language is a joy to live with. A dominant green palette suggests cool alpine meadows and forests; blues convey crystalline skies and mountain distance; and warm yellow accents bathe the scene in high-altitude sunlight. Rounded, organic motifs at the top form a floral canopy—pure Art Nouveau—while the crisp geometry of architecture and signage introduces a satisfying counterbalance. The result is romantic yet well-ordered, equally at home in classic interiors or pared-back contemporary rooms. For lovers of France, alpine landscapes, and railway heritage, it’s a timeless statement piece.

Gift-ready and endlessly evocative, this print is perfect for anyone who has explored Briançon or dreams of the French Alps. It makes a thoughtful present for Christmas, birthdays, housewarmings, Mother’s or Father’s Day, anniversaries, or to celebrate a recent trip along the Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée route.
